Homozygous/heterozygous/genotype/phenotype continued

Todays daily questions:

Here is a video that explains this much of the daily questions:
We went a step further and drew out the punnet square of this cross

We wrapped up this first part of the chapter by predicting genotypes based on phenotypes of some celebrities (this was actualy done yesterday)

Then you worked through some questions on what we have learned so far and moved into an inventory of our own traits.  Keep in mind.... our actual phenotypes are determined by MUCH more complex genetics than just this.  We are just using this as a starting place.  Check out the following link that details these myths.

We will continue with that tomorrow after the DQQ

Heredity day 2

We continued to chug through the sea of new vocabulary today and hopefully will start to put it to work starting tomorrow:  here are the daily questions and notes for today.

Intro to heredity

Friday we had our mitosis/DNA/DNA Replication/Meiosis Exam.
Monday you received those tests back.
Monday we also talked about all the "what ifs" of meiosis and fertilization including watching some podcasts about parasitic twins and chimeras.  Some neat stuff for sure!!

Today we started right into the next topic which is heredity.  We started with the following daily questions
And then into notes:
We talked a little about Mendel and his experiments.  to listen to a version similar  to mine, watch the video below.

some more info on alleles:

A GREAT look at what we talked about so far can be found below:

Mitosis Meiosis Review

Review day for the test!!!
I gave you guys some study guides and the first couple classes logged on to study island to review.  It was a blessing in disguise when they wouldn't work well for me because the rest of the classes we ended up doing the review together.  I focused the most today on teaching you guys HOW to study.  Just looking over the notes doesn't usually help but seeing if you could make a story of it, or an analogy.  I have been trying to model this when I go through the daily questions, but.... it will take time!!! I am also taking a stab at making some screen casts of lectures.  We'll see what happens with these!!
Here were some of the study island questions with the dialog we had.  You can log on yourself - remember your login is FIRSTNAMELAST.ECASD - password is probably your student ID
The other place to help review is:**** Be prepared for open ended questions!!!!!!!!*****

Meiosis wrap up

Friday February 14th we had our daily question quiz and continued through the notes on meiosis.

Monday February 17th  we did not have a daily question we went RIGHT into the notes and finished them up today.  Here was today's daily question and the rest of the notes from this chapter. Also check out the videos I have posted if #1 you missed any days or #2.  You still need clarification on this topic!!!
This was the answer to the second question - using our models and drawing it out we can see that the result would be some gametes missing a chromosome and some gametes with an extra chromosome.  See later in this post for notes on this and a video link to explain further.
Here were the notes for all of meiosis that we got Friday Monday and Today.

This are two different videos that are a good overall look at meiosis:
