Tuesday October 27th - Introduction to Enzymes

Today's Daily Questions hit a key part of yesterday's discussion and then led us into an introduction to our last topic of this chapter, Enzymes.

You then worked through a set of wrap up questions about the different macro molecules.  You actually received this work sheet at the BEGINNING of this section.  I informed you then, though, that I would not grade it for correction until I had taught it all to you!

Next up..... ENZYMES
We didn't get very far into enzymes but at least did a nice intro that we will continue through tomorrow.
I found the following video that REALLY does a nice intro to enzymes.  She's no Hank Green but I LOVE how she describes enzymes!!!

Monday October 26th - Finish up Organic Compounds

Friday after the daily question quiz I gave you time to finish up the organic molecules wrap up questions (the two sample constructed response questions and those from the keystone finish line book)
As always we started with daily questions:

We then took one last look at examples of proteins:
and you found out about the proteins in Jello:
And finally we finished off with Nucleic Acids:

Friday October 23rd - Macromolecules Structure and Function DQQ

It' FRIDAY!!!
You know what THAT means!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Click one the images above to access the quiz.  Good Luck!!!

GO BLUE!!!!!

Tuesday and Wednesday October 20 - 21 Lipids and Proteins

We have ALMOST got through all the organic molecules!!  Yesterday we went through most of lipids, we finished that up today and started into proteins.

Daily Questions from the last two days:

Monday October 19th - Glucose review and intro to dehydration sysnthesis

The first part of today's daily questions continued along with the book work and finished up the 'intro' to each of the Organic Macromolecules.  I had you reference the back page of the book work to answer these:
The second part of the daily questions was a review of Glucose:
And you rebuilt your Glucose models from last week:

Here is a video that summarized both the drawing of a glucose and the building of one:

We then continued through Carbohydrates:
And into how monomers bond together to form polymers:

I had each group then bond their own glucose together and see how you end up with a Maltose molecule AND are left with a WATER molecule:

We will continue with that activity at the beginning of the period tomorrow!

Friday October 16th - Carbon and Organic Compounds Intro Daily Question Quiz

You know the routine my friends!!!

Good LUCK!!!

Thursday October 15th - Continue through Carbohydrates

Wednesday The 14th you guys got to spend the class in the cafeteria while the 10th graders took their PSAT.  I did ask that you finish the book work I gave you on Tuesday.

Today I had a chance to see all classes so we could continue to go through Organic Compounds.  We started off with the following daily questions:
ScreenCast of today's Daily Question Discussion:
We revisited the last slide from Wednesday and then Started to build Glucose models:

Tuesday October 13th - Intro to Carbon and Organic Compounds

Today we used the following daily questions as a segway into why carbon is so uniquely suited to form biological molecules.
Here was a screencast of our discussion around these:
We then moved into a VERY informative crash course.  While it makes a strange analogy - it is one that is PERFECT for understanding Carbon!!
Then we moved right into notes:
You then received a Directed reading and questions to work through sometime before Thursday. I WILL NOT SEE YOU TOMORROW.  You will report to the cafeteria 2nd period due to the PSATs being administered to all 10th graders.

Have that ready to go on Thursday!

Wednesday and Thursday October 7th and 8th - pH

Wednesday you guys worked through a Properties of Water Wrap up and then started into notes on pH

Today we started with the following daily questions:

We then FINISHED our discussion about pH - Here were ALL the pH notes:

We started through some questions about pH - Here was the discussion around one of them.

Tuesday October 6th - Wrap up Properties of Water

The daily questions for Tuesday went RIGHT along with Monday's discussion about heat of vaporization:

Of all the properties of water that help support life, waters specific heat/heat of vaporization and heat of fusion are probably the one we can relate to the most.

We moved into the density of water and water a "universal" solvent:
I showed you guys this video that details the different densities of water:

Finally, we finished up the last property important to life.
