Properties of water notes and demonstrations day 1

Announcements / Reminders
WEDNESDAY we will have a Water Lab Wrap up.
FRIDAY we will have our normal daily question quiz.

When you guys came in today you noticed that your desks had set ups something like this:

I started you off with the following daily questions and discussions.

We reviewed the concept of hydrogen bonding between water molecules using the models we worked with on Friday.

Next up was to see what the chemical properties of water have to do with life.  To give you a little "teaser" on this we watched the following introduction video.

Then into the first property of water:
And then our first demonstrations:
You poured water from your beaker into the baby food jar until it reached the rim and SLIGHTLY higher.  This showed you immediately the power of surface tension.

You then used pins to see how they can float.  This was to simulate what happens with many insects on water.
Some of you had a chance to watch this short video that shows how surface tension works.
