Mitosis vs meiosis, gametes vs somatic cells, cyclins and cancer... HOLY MOLY we learned a lot this week!!!!!

FIRST off I just want to say....................

CONGRATS to the Girls Varsity Basketball team for making the playoffs for the first time since even I was in high school!!!! (That's been a long time!!)

Today we were back in the computer lab to take our daily question quiz on EDLINE and start into an online animation of how Cancer grows and spreads.

Then on to the cancer site to answer the questions (Here is a link to the pdf version of your worksheet)

We will wrap all this up on Monday - you will begin to review on Tuesday - Wednesday we will have our formal review and Exam next Thursday!!

Have a great weekend guys :)

Continuation on Cancer

REMINDERS:
*****Daily Question Quiz tomorrow
We have had a LOT of daily questions this week that have had a LOT of discussion around them.  This daily question quiz will be a little longer than our normal ones.

*******We will be wrapping all this up on Monday - Review materials / session next Tuesday and Wednesday.  Looking to have the exam next Thursday.
Today's Daily Questions:

We moved into a basic understanding of cancer next:

Then we watched a couple YouTube videos on cancer:

We only watched about the first couple minutes of this next one.  It has GREAT information - but more info than you guys need to know
And finally one about how cancer is often treated and WHY

Finish up cell cycle control and introduction into cancer

Again today's daily questions introduced you to some new terms.  Specifically we learned about the terms Haploid and Diploid.  Check out our daily questions here:

Then we finished up the three checkpoints.  I am including all three checkpoints in today's post just to keep them all together.

Next we moved into Cancer and will finish that up tomorrow.

Cell Cycle Control and Cancer Day 1

Today we start into the WHY SHOULD WE CARE about this portion of the chapter.  Now.... keep in mind that this ENTIRE chapter has a LOT to do with us.  Its how we grow, repair dead and damaged cells, etc.  When mitosis and the cell cycle are going smoothly its not really THAT interesting.  BUT..... what happens when the cell loses control??????
Well today's daily questions gave us an introduction to how the cell cycle is controlled.

Then we started into our notes for today - we will continue with these tomorrow and move into some more details about cancer.

Mitosis vs Meiosis, Somatic Cells vs Gametes - Getting some new terminology down!!

Another beautiful 2 hour delay today!!  Gave you some extra sleep and made you even more ready to DOMINATE the day!!!

Ok... Today we spend the entire time on daily questions.  I chose to print these out for you for two reasons. #1... I would take you FOREVER to write all this down AND attempt to draw out the cyclin graph.....  #2.  This was a two fold activity, it served as our daily questions AND discussion for the day.  I asked you to write all the extra notes that I did.  This seemed to be a better idea then just having you just jot a bunch of vocab terms and definitions in your notebooks!

Here we go!!!

YES... I realize I spelled Genetically wrong..... I am a TERRIBLE on the spot speller....

Friday January 30th

Friday we took our Daily Question Quiz directly on Edline.

Then you had some practice and intro to the next couple topics on study island:

You received another study guide - this time on meiosis - to help you answer questions referring to that.

MITOSIS!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't ask me why I felt it necessary to put four exclamation points on the title of this post..... probably because I am FINALLY feeling better and have my normal energy back.
So here we go - today's daily questions:
Then we went into Mitosis!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Again with the exclamation points?!?!?!)

First a quick reminder of what was happening during interphase and what the DNA looked like during that time.

The DNA during Interphase is all messy and unwound.  This is because the "instruction manual" needs to be open so the cell can read it to make all the proteins needed to do what the cell does.
During the S phase a copy of all that DNA is made but is still all "messy".  NOW the cells starts into the division of the nucleus.
First the STAGES of mitosis.  I HATE having you memorize things for the sake of memorizing and there will never be a time i say "List the stages of mitosis in order"....... WHO CARES?!?!?  What I REALLY care about is that you understand what is HAPPENING during Mitosis.
BUT.... in case you just like to memorize things......... here are some ways to remember them ;)

Now for the fun.....

FIRST..... Using our STRING models.....the Chromatin has Condensed to form the nice compact Sister Chromatids.
With our Mitosis Models it looked like this:

Next up..... Metaphase Middle.... METAPHASE MIDDLE METAPHASE MIDDLE

ANAPHASE APART!!!!

Got that so far?!?!  METAPHASE MIDDLE, ANAPHASE APART all together now METAPHASE MIDDLE ANAPHASE APART!!!

Finally.....

AND the chromosomes start to uncoil.  So back to the MESSY form (since these will next become two cells and each of those cells will be right back in interphase where the instruction manual need to open)

Now that Mitosis is complete the cell goes through cytokinesis.

and OF COURSE we had some songs to remember this.........
I SOOOOOOOOOOO need to bring my guitar and we should make a song ;)

Because we need to outdo THIS guy - Mr.W ain't got nothin' on Miss E ;)

DAILY QUESTION QUIZ TOMORROW!!!!  Great job today!!!!
