Tuesday March 22nd - Nondisjunction and Gene Expression Review

We have our test tomorrow on gene expression.  I wanted to finish up one more thing about chromosomal mutations so we talked a little bit through Nondisjunction.
Here is a quick visual of this:

THEN we did our daily questions (as an assignment)
What to look over for the test tomorrow:
#1.  As usual - all your daily questions / worksheets and daily question quizzes (available in your Google Drive in the folder "Shared with Me")

#2.  The practice tests on Study Island.

#4.  The  study guide I handed out today.  They are some CHALLENGING questions - make sure to get those to me tomorrow!!

Finally - DON'T FORGET!!!!

Exemption form and end of term bonus assignment DUE ON THURSDAY!!!

Monday March 21st - Frameshift and Chromosomal Mutations

ALMOST THERE!!!!!

Some important announcements today regarding the end of the nine weeks.

ALSO - The Exemption form will also need to be submitted by Thursday.  You can click on the image in the right hand column of the blog to access that.

Today's daily questions took up a lot of the class period, mostly because I used the first one to teach you about frameshift mutations.

Thursday March 17th - HAPPY ST.PATRICK'S DAY!!!

I didn't do a post yesterday because I let you have the whole period to finish up the Transcription Translation worksheet.  That was tough for sure but hopefully the our discussion and walk through together helped put you on the right track!!

TODAY though - we kept moving on moving on!!

Goals and Reminders:

Aannnnnnnnd special birthday shoutout

Today's Daily Questions:
Then we moved back into a little bit of notes:
We started with just a review of Transcription / Translation:
Then we moved into what happens AFTER the protein is released from the Ribosome:
I went through the final "OVERALL" analogy of the instruction manual.

AND then...... TMNT show up!!
More about this after the daily question quiz tomorrow!!!!!

Translation Day 2 - Pop it bead amino acids and foam ribosomes!!

Same reminders / Goals as yesterday.

I printed out your daily questions since they took up so much space!!

Here were the pics that go along with our discussion:

Next up - We went through all the stages of Translation using pop it beads and foam sheets!

And we set that up with our models:

Step 2:

Things keep GOING and GOING  and GOING

UNTIL.....

We talked a little more about the transcription / Translation worksheet that is due tomorrow.

Good times guys!!! :)

Translation Day 1

We are starting off another action packed week!
Last week we got through an overview of Gene expression and specifically through Transcription.  This week we will focus on Translation and Mutations. I anticipate our exam on this chapter being next Tuesday or Wednesday!

Goals and Reminders for today:
Today's daily questions:
If you notice - Today's Module A Keystone questions go RIGHT along with what we are learning now.  I mentioned all through the first half of the year that this will all start to make sense as we go.  Hopefully you are seeing that now!

We then went into some notes:

At this point we took a look at our "Transcription and Translation Worksheet" and started to go through the first example.  The FIRST thing I had you do was "reverse" transcription (taking the mRNA and determining the original coding DNA sequence)

THEN - You used the Codon chart found on your Gene Expression Study Guide to fill in the corresponding amino acids.
Then we continued through notes:
