Friday February 26th - Introduction to complex forms of inheritance

Thursday you had your Heredity Daily Question Quiz and then worked on a study guide.

Friday I gave you about 15 minutes to finish up the study guide that you received on Thursday and to answer the following daily questions.

This was our first look at non-Mendelian forms of inheritance (complex forms of inheritance.)

Then we started into notes about the first type of non-Mendelian genetics.
A good description and examples of polygenic inheritance are found in this video:

The next video does a good job at specifically look at how MANY genes actually end up coding for eye color

Wednesday February 24th - Pedigrees, punnett squares, Fainting goats - OH MY!!

Goals and Reminders for today....
Today's Daily questions were a little complex - simply because you really needed to walk step by step through the process.  Today - not only did I include a screenshot of our Daily Question - But also a Screencast!  It would help if you listened to that if you were absent today!!

Next up - I gave you about 5-10 minutes to finish up the assignment you got yesterday.  If you STILL did not get that finished it will be due tomorrow.

Onto a little bit of notes as an intro to complex forms of inheritance:

FIRST though....  We watched fainting goats...

THEN....

Tuesday February 23rd - Continue with Punnett Squares and assessment

Today we continued with a look at heredity and the use of both Punnett squares and pedigrees in predicting parental and offspring genotypes.

Our goals for today were really the same as yesterday - we just went one step deeper today.

Daily Questions were a nice intro to terms such as "true breeding", "Self pollinating", and "Cross Pollinating."  It also provided an introduction on how to map out a pedigree.

We then moved into a bit of notes.  Today's notes were more of just a focus on terminology.  Genetics really has it's own language and I at least want you to be familiar with some of these terms.

You had the last 10 minutes or so to begin on the "Heredity and Punnett Square Intro"  worksheet.  You will have a bit of time tomorrow to work through this as well.

Take care my friends!

Monday February 22nd - Punnett Square Intro

HAPPY MONDAY!!! - Can you even BELIEVE how nice it has been outside?!?!?  I'm not complaining :)

Friday we had a good time looking at an inventory of our traits.  Today we moved more into heredity.  Goals and reminders:

Our daily questions were an INTERESTING example....  (note:  not a real example at ALL!!)
Next up...  I gave you guys about 10 minutes to finish up the inventory of your traits while i played the following Crash Course.

Now into some notes:

Friday February 19th - Inventory of our Traits

FUN times today!!!!!    LOADED with content though!!   We started with a CRAZY complex set of daily questions based of a complex genetic family!!

There was one last slide that I had you get down before we started with activities.
After talking through these two, together as a class we predicted genotypes of a couple celebrities based off their phenotypes

 THEN.....

We took a look at a whole host of our traits and jotted down our phenotypes and then predicted our genotypes.

Pics of some of our traits:
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAND.....  our favorite.... Whether or not you could taste PTC.

Good times today!!!  We will wrap this up on Monday - Enjoy the weekend!!!
